in the National Registry, known as the Waterman Tavern
~ The house was the center of Coventry's town business from 1741-1835
~ Capt. John Waterman (1698-1752), who gave the name to the tavern, was
the great-grandson of Roger Williams (Founder of Rhode Island)
~ In 1781, General Rochambeau used the Waterman Tavern as his
Headquarters, while commanding a French military force
~ General Nathanial Greene would hold his military and political meetings
at the Tavern
~ In 1784,General Greene toured Rhode Island with General Lafayette and
made a stop at the Waterman Tavern. General Lafayette left his sword mark
upon the parlor mantel,where it still remains today |
